The Sharpsburg Police Department Chief Tom Stelitano reported to Council an end-of-year report of 3,661 incident reports filed, with 829 citations issued and 370 traffic stops in 2017. The department officers are proud to protect and serve the community, respond to residential and business calls, patrol streets for safe traffic and attend community events to create a positive police presence. Sharpsburg PD this year also began training and pursuing a K-9 Officer for the department, and initiated an anti-bullying ordinance to better identify and provide preventative resources for youth.

The department, under Chief Lou Costanzo, operates with a volunteer crew, dedicating hours to responding to emergency calls for health emergencies, structure fires and public service needs. The all-volunteer department invests hundreds of hours in educational courses and training – including National Pro-Board Certifications in Hazardous materials and Firefighter I and II – to improve readiness for emergency response and keep the department’s skills current.
