Sharpsburg Guyasuta Committee, Inc.

For the past fifteen years, the Sharpsburg Guyasuta Committee has met and planned several activities throughout the year to benefit the community of Sharpsburg through improving the resources of the community, assisting residents in times of disaster and by providing financial support for educational opportunities.

Scholarships will be made available this year (2011) to three hardworking Sharpsburg high school seniors. To qualify for a Sharpsburg Guyasuta Committee Scholarship, a senior should submit a letter of interest, their school transcripts, along with a 500 word essay on how this award will benefit the Community of Sharpsburg. Deadline for submittals is May 1st, 2011.  Grant winners will be announced at the opening ceremony for Guyasuta Day’s Festival!

The Sharpsburg Guyasuta Committee has successfully held its 15 annual Guyasuta Festival, which honors the Native American, Chief Guyasuta, who lived in the Sharpsburg area during the early days of America. This festival provides businesses and non-profit organizations with the opportunity to raise money by sponsoring a food or game booth for the week. The committee plans week-long events including: carnival rides, nightly entertainment, free corn and watermelon, a full day of free activities, games and prizes for children. The Festival ends with a parade and spectacular fireworks display. The festival committee wishes to thank all that participated, workers and players, to make this year’s festival another success!

Movies in the Park is a Saturday night activity held in Kennedy Park by the Sharpsburg Guyasuta Committee.  In its 4th year, the movies, watched on a screen in the park, provides the Sharpsburg community with family entertainment from dusk until 10:30 PM.  Refreshments are available at the Kennedy Park building. Provided at reasonable prices by the Sharpsburg Guyasuta Committee. Two movies will be shown in 2011.  Look for an announcement this summer, right here, as to the movie, dates and times.

The committee meets monthly, on the second Wednesday, except in December and August, to plan the festival and also to evaluate requests for financial assistance from various organizations.
